Mental Illness vs Mental Health. Both are different.
Mental Illness is a health condition involving changes in emotion, thinking or behaviour. It is a medical problem just like heart disease or diabetes. It is nothing to be ashamed of. Nearly 1 in 5 adults experience some form of mental illness. This effects tens of millions of people each year. Mental illness is treatable, but only half of people receive the treatment they need. Signs and symptoms can vary, depending on the disorder. Feeling sad or down, excessive fear or worries, withdrawal from friends and family, uncontrollable anger, suicidal thoughts, extreme mood changes, and the inability to cope with daily problems or stress are to name a few. The stigma is often worse than the illness itself.
People are still scared of mental illness because they don’t understand it. Imagine how the person living with it feels?
Mental Health includes emotional, psychological, and social wellbeing. It effects how we think and act. It helps determine how we handle stress, relate to others, and make choices. Many factors contribute to mental health problems, including: biological factors such as genes or brain chemistry, life experiences such as trauma or abuse or family history of mental problems. We all have the potential to develop mental health problems, no matter how old we are, whether male or female, rich or poor, or which ethnic group we belong too. Anxiety/stress/panic disorders, OCD, phobias, and PTSD are to name a few mental health concerns.
People are still scared of it therefore don’t understand it. Imagine how the person living with it feels?
We chose these three songs because their authors all suffer/suffered from symptoms of one or both categories above. It is a terrible way to live and the daily pain is unbearable and often it results in death.
‘Zombie’
The Cranberries lead singer Dolores O’Riordan struggled against bipolar disorder, manic, substance and other mental issues. Music, dancing and performing improved her health. Her death, still not holding a lot of evidence is said to be due to accidental drowning as a result of intoxication with 4 times the normal limit of alcohol in her system.
‘Nothing Compares to You’
Sinead O’ Connor has struggled with several mental issues such as: substance abuse, PTSD, depression and suicidal thoughts. She has struggled her entire life with these issues and wants people to see and recognize how terrible it is. In several cases she has come out and publicly asked for help.
‘Human’
Christina Perri struggled with thoughts of suicide as young as 8 years old. She has battled anxiety, depression, addiction, and eating disorders. Music has played a vital role with her battle with mental illness. She tried prescribed medication to help her between the ages of 10-14 but later admits that music did more for her than medication ever could. Her fight has been life long and she still copes with every day symptoms.
We mixed these three songs together not only because they are incredibly iconic, but because the artists are all singing for the same purpose. ‘Human’ was added to act as that small soft inner voice in someone dealing with mental health who is screaming to be heard. It softly sneaks in blending with the other two songs. Please hear me, please see me, and please recognize what I am going through.. I need help because "I’m Only Human".
