The Fighter - In This Moment - cover - Kati Cher - Ken Tamplin Vocal Academy

I confess, this was a tough one for me and here's why:

Lead vocalist for "In This Moment" Maria Brink has a tough story but a story worth telling.

As a young child, Maria was sexually abused by her father. He soon after completely abandoned her and her mother. The In This Moment song, "Daddy's Falling Angel" was a direct reference to this particular time in her life.
Maria gave birth to her son Davion at the tender age of 15. The songs "He Said Eternity" and "All For You" were written with him in mind.

During these teen years, Maria was severely depressed and suicidal.
The birth of her son caused her to appreciate life and she snapped out of it.

In high school, Maria was part of a group of people labelled as the "burn outs", (people didn't even graduate from high school).

Soon after she had her son, she moved out on her own and got her own apartment. She worked at a local laundromat to help pay the rent.
Maria's mother was a drug addict. Maria eventually helped her mother to get checked into rehab and she is now clean.
Maria's first band, at age 18 was an Albany-based band called Pulse.
They opened local shows for bands such as Coal Chamber and Sevendust, but they eventually broke up.

Soon after her first band's break-up, she was convinced she would be more successful in LA. So she packed up her things into a U-Haul van, and she drove cross-country so she could follow her dreams. It wasn't until almost six weeks later that she flew her son out to LA.

During this time, Maria's closest friend died. So the song "Legacy of Odio" as a tribute to the death of her best friend.

Musically speaking, much like Devin Townsend, Maria's specific brand of screaming is what is known as melodic screaming, in which you are basically screaming onto pitch. You are essentially singing and screaming at the same time. This tends to cause more wear and tear on the vocal cords than other forms of screaming, which means she has to be VERY careful to not destroy her voice.

With all that said:
Kati and I chose "The Fighter."

This song could not be more fitting for Maria and others like her.

But on a creepy note, this song also feels spiritually very dark to me.

I am not afraid to examine this in fact it is worth examining.

At some points it almost feels like the devil talking. (I am not kidding). And the deception of "Good and Evil."

Ken, what do you mean by that?

I mean at some points it sounds like she is talking about her ex-lover, and at other points it sounds like she is channeling the relationship between Satan and God Himself.

Go ahead and laugh at me all you want for saying this, but listen closely to the lyric and you will see what I mean.

Remember the song "Sympathy For The Devil by The Rolling Stones?"

To me it feels like a "twisting" of the perception of light and darkness from the Devil's perspective.

And if you think I am crazy let me go even farther.

I remember when I saw the movie Gladiator. (I am a history buff, graduating from UCLA.)

I thought to myself, how in the world did David Franzoni (the screenwriter for Gladiator) just get me to feel sorry for the incredible - insane - brutal treatment of Rome's conquest throughout the world?

I know the story. I know what really happened. And yet I am rooting for Russel Crowe!!!

I could give you many more examples than just The Rolling Stones and Gladiator.

But my point is: I feel we are living in an era where light is exchanged for darkness and vice versa.

And I personally will recognize it as such.

In Maria's case, she has had a very tough life and has made it through the fire.

So there must be a loving, honest evaluation of that.

I hope I have done this.
